American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 with five options. The BU series featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins, while the Proof series offered only a 1 oz gold coin. Fractional-ounce gold was added to the Proof series in 1987 and 1988, with Burnished coins added in 2006. Though Burnished coins originally had all four weights, only a 1 oz gold coin is available as of 2011.
